Cold, Wet and Still Playing: A Winter Golf Survival Guide

I’ve just spent a very cold, day at The Club at Cams Hall Estate, and it reminded me of something important:
Most golfers massively underestimate what winter golf does to their body, their game, and their equipment.
If you’re going to brave the winter months instead of packing the clubs away until April, here are some practical ways to stay warm, protect your body, and keep your clubs performing.

1. Layer Smart, Not Bulky

Big coats might feel warm on the first tee, but they kill your rotation and ruin your swing.
Think in layers:
  • Start with a moisture‑wicking base layer (top and bottom)
  • Add a light thermal mid‑layer
  • Finish with a thin, waterproof, windproof shell
You want warmth without restriction. If you can’t comfortably make a full practice swing before you walk to the first tee, you’re wearing too much.

2. Protect Your Hands and Feet

Once your hands and feet go, your round stops being fun.
  • Use winter gloves or keep a spare towel and hand warmers in your pocket
  • Rotate two towels – one in play, one kept dry in the bag
  • Invest in waterproof shoes and decent thermal socks
Cold, numb fingers and wet feet turn a good day out into a miserable trudge by the 6th hole.

3. Respect the Warm‑Up

In summer you can sometimes get away with a rushed warm‑up. In winter, that’s how little niggles turn into real injuries.
Give yourself 10–15 minutes before you tee off:
  • Do some dynamic stretches for hips, hamstrings and shoulders
  • Make a few slow, deliberate practice swings to get everything moving
  • Start with shorter clubs to find your rhythm
Your swing speed naturally drops in the cold. A proper warm‑up helps you maintain tempo instead of “lashing at it” to chase distance.

4. Adjust Your Expectations (and Your Club Selection)

Cold air is heavier and the ground is softer. The ball simply doesn’t travel as far in winter.
  • Expect to hit 1–2 clubs more than you would in summer
  • Prioritise fairways and greens over hero shots
  • Focus on solid contact and good decision‑making
Winter is a great time to work on rhythm, balance and course management instead of obsessing over the scorecard.

5. Look After Your Clubs in Winter Conditions

Mud, sand and wet grass build up quickly in the grooves and on the grips when it’s cold and wet. That affects:
  • Spin and control, especially with wedges
  • Consistency of strike
  • Grip and confidence in the hands
A few simple habits go a long way:
  • Wipe the club face and grooves after every shot
  • Keep a separate towel for club heads and grips
  • Don’t leave your clubs wet in the boot for days – that’s when rust and mould start
If you want to go a step further, an ultrasonic clean will strip out the compacted dirt and debris that normal cleaning can’t reach. A deep clean of your grips can also bring back a lot of lost tackiness.
That’s exactly what we do at Club Clean Pro when we’re out at places like Cams Hall, Royal Winchester, Wellow and other clubs across Hampshire.

6. Treat Winter Golf as Training Season

Instead of seeing winter golf as “survival mode”, treat it as pre‑season for your best golf next year:
  • Work on one or two key swing thoughts
  • Practice course management in tougher conditions
  • Keep your equipment in top condition so you’re ready when the sun returns
You might not shoot your lowest scores in January, but you can absolutely build the foundations for them.

Keep Your Clubs Ready for Winter

If you’re playing through the winter and want your clubs and grips performing at their best, Club Clean Pro can help.
We provide on‑site ultrasonic golf club cleaning at charity days, corporate events and club competitions across Hampshire and the surrounding areas. If you’d like to know when we’re next at your club – or you’re organising an event and want to offer professional club cleaning on the day – you can get in touch here:
Stay warm, stay dry, and enjoy your winter golf.
